Critically injured by a drunk driver? What comes next?

On Behalf of | Apr 4, 2023 | Auto Accidents, Drunk Driving Accidents, Personal Injury

In Texas, a person dies every nine hours due to an alcohol-related motor vehicle accident. Unfortunately, the state of Texas ranks 5th in the nation for crashes caused by drunk driving, and it does not seem to be getting better. In 2020, for example, there was a 12.2% increase in drunk driving accidents from the previous year.

Many of these accidents involve people who left bars feeling “tipsy” and were driving home. While this may seem innocent, it can devastate other people. It is of grave concern across the state and around the country due to the prevalence of these accidents, the increase in the number of deaths associated with drunk driving accidents and the horrific aftermath of dealing with the consequences.

Post-accident problems

If you survived an accident caused by a drunk driver, you can count yourself extremely lucky. However, you may have sustained injuries that will affect your life forever. For example, you could have disabilities due to the injuries you sustained. You may have astronomical medical bills and cannot work now and provide for your family or enjoy the activities and hobbies that once brought you joy.

For this reason, the justice system offers a way for victims of drunk driving accidents to bring a claim for damages against the drunk driver, their assets, and perhaps other parties who may have contributed to the accident.

How can an attorney help you?

An attorney can help show who was, in fact, responsible for the accident. Attorneys know the ins and outs of investigations, what to look for, how insurance companies work, and the relevant legal procedures. Their job is to advocate for you to get you what you deserve through a settlement or trial.

Drunk driving can result in severe consequences, including fatalities. It is so important to remember this before you get behind the wheel, even if you feel that you are only “tipsy” and not full-out drunk. Being mindful and careful can save lives, including yours.
