Handguns are supposed to be manufactured to a certain standard so that they can never fire accidentally. Naturally, this means that the gun should never be able to fire on its own, and one test that is used is known as the drop test, which checks to make sure a gun can’t even fire if someone drops it on the ground. The trigger has to be pulled.
At least, that’s how it’s supposed to work. According to some reports, one of the most popular handguns in the United States – the Sig Sauer P320 – is alleged to have fired on its own for more than 100 different people. They claim they never pulled the trigger and yet the gun discharged anyway, demonstrating a potentially serious defect.
Have there been any injuries?
Yes, injuries have been reported. One study claimed that more than 80 people had been injured in these accidental shootings. The study did not mention any deaths, but some of the injuries could have been quite serious.
For example, one Navy veteran had taken his P320 to the gun range to train. When he put it in his holster, after he was done, he says it fired again. The bullet passed through both his thigh and his calf muscle.
What does the company say?
For their part, Sig Sauer claims that it’s impossible to fire the gun without pulling the trigger and that they have never managed to do so in tests. They also point out that people have made plenty of similar reports of the alleged self-discharge of other guns.
