2 common workplace accidents that happen in the Texas oil fields

On Behalf of | Sep 13, 2023 | Oil Field Accidents

The Texas oil fields are known for their vast oil and natural gas production, making them a crucial part of the state’s economy. However, the nature of the industry also brings its fair share of workplace hazards.

Safety measures and protocols are essential to help mitigate these risks, but accidents can still occur. Here are two common workplace accidents that happen in the oil fields and ways to help prevent them.

1. Slips, trips and falls

Slips, trips and falls are among the most common workplace accidents in any industry, and the Texas oil fields are no exception. The combination of uneven terrain, slick surfaces and the need for rapid movement can lead to accidents. Workers are often required to move quickly around equipment, oil rigs and drilling sites, increasing the risk of slips and falls.

These accidents can be prevented by ensuring workers have proper footwear with slip-resistant soles. The walking surfaces should also be maintained regularly to help ensure they’re not slippery. More importantly, oil refineries should invest in adequate lighting in all work areas.

2. Machinery accidents

Oil fields are filled with heavy machinery and equipment, which pose a significant risk to workers. Accidents involving machinery can result from improper operation, equipment malfunction or lack of training.

As such, refineries should roll out comprehensive training for all employees on the safe operation of machinery. Moreover, these pieces of equipment should be inspected and maintained regularly to help ensure they’re functioning as designed. Clear signage and barriers should indicate dangerous areas.

While oil fields are essential for energy production and economic growth, they pose significant workplace hazards. And while prevention is key, workers shouldn’t hesitate to seek compensation when they sustain work-related injuries.
