The dangers of thinking you can drive through your fatigue

If you have ever felt a wave of tiredness come over you while driving, you may have decided to push on through it. Perhaps you had a deadline to meet or just wanted to get the journey over with. Either way, it’s important to know that continuing as you were was a potentially dangerous decision.

While you are certainly not the only one who has done this, it is crucial to understand that tiredness increases your risk of a crash. This is true if it is just a minor bout of tiredness or fatigue that has built up over time.

Driving requires you to be alert

Drivers are not always as alert as they should be. Sometimes it is because they get distracted, but often it is because they are tired. This can make it difficult for them to focus, which is essential for noticing potential dangers. The tiredness can also make their ability to react to danger much slower.

If you have ever struggled to answer a relatively simple question, such as “How many sugars do you want in your coffee?” after a late night out, you’ll understand the brain doesn’t always function optimally. By the time your tired brain has worked out you need to apply the brakes, and your tired body has pushed down on the pedals, it might already be too late to stop in time. Had you been fully rested and alert, stopping in time might have been no issue at all.

If you are involved in a crash, learning how to search for clues that the other driver was tired could give you a much-needed lead to pursue a compensation claim. Meanwhile, be sure to heed any signs of tiredness when you drive and take a break rather than trying to push on through.
